Foto Finish: Birds

This weeks Foto Finish theme is Birds.

This roadrunner was the first thing I thought of!

I took this shot in 2007 while on my solo roadtrip.
If I remember correctly, it was at a rest area
 in New Mexico.

Check out more wonderful photos at Cat Patches!

Foto Finish - Leaves

This week for Foto Finish,
our optional theme is

LEAVES.

I know it's that time of the year, in
North America at least,
when the leaves are supposed to turn all those
gorgeous fall colors.

But I live in Southern California.
We rarely follow the rules here.
Well, at least not at my house!

I took this picture of the leaves on one of the rose bushes
in my Tortured Rose Garden
yesterday.
That would be
Friday, October 12, 2012.

While they do have that cool, Fall color scheme,
is isn't because they're getting ready to drop off,
but rather because they are

Brand New Growth!

Join in the fun -

and share some of YOUR leaves!

Enjoy,

Foto Finish - WET

Since I could barely see out of the windows in my car,
I decided to run it through the $5 car wash the other day.

As I was sitting in the car,
waiting for my turn to be propelled through
the whips and rags, soap & water,
it occured to me that the (optional) theme for
FOTO FINISH this week is

*W*E*T*!

What better place to find a photo of W*E*T,
in the So Cal droughtland,
than in a car wash?

Last time through I took a video.  You can see it here.

The hard part was picking just one.
I liked the way it looks like scratches on the glass,
but I think it's really just the water from the sprayers on each side of the car colliding.

wetness

Foto Finish - Funny

This week our suggested theme
is
Funny!

I've been thinking, sorting through photos
in my mind,
and only one kept popping up,
over and over.

So here it is...

Huh?
No pets allowed in the pet area?
WHAT?!?

I saw this in a rest area somewhere between
Evanston, Wyoming &
Gooding, Idaho.

Share some of your funniness with us

Foto Finish - HOT!

I took this photo just TODAY!
It was really to show that I was getting close to all sevens on my odometer...

Then I noticed the outside temperature.

About a half-hour later my friend called me
& said it was raining at her house,
which is only about 20 miles from where I took this picture.  And on the news there were also reports of
thunderstorms with hail!
I just don't understand how it can be over 100F
and hailing!

Foto Finish - Travel

Hooray!  Foto Finish is back!!
I'm hoping to climb out of my bubble and actually start posting in a more regular fashion, so here's my start...

This is Lake Pleasant, in Peoria, Arizona.
The water, in some places looked almost teal blue!
Looking at this shot, I find it hard to remember that it was 109F when I took it.
My sister & I traveled to Arizona to spend Father's Day weekend visiting our Dad.  The three of us took a drive from his house to Lake Pleasant that Saturday.
I believe that spiny plant is an Ocotillo, but it was too hot to get out of the car for a closer look.
It was so beautiful there,
but we were very happy to see a Shaved Ice truck/cart!

Have a great weekend!

This is one of my friend Kim's cats, Ries (short for Riesling).

What was THAT??!?

You might remember seeing her
when she was just a wee bit of a kitten:

She's much bigger these days.

But still a ham!

Foto Finish --- True Blue

Here is another picture I took while on my solo roadtrip in 2007.  I was tempted to use one of my myriad sky shots, but decided to go in a slightly different direction.
(Are you surprised??!?)

According to National Garden Clubs and The National Remember Our Troops Campaign, the Blue Star Memorial Program began in 1944 with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs as a living memorial to veterans of World War II.  The next year, the National Council of State Garden Clubs began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers highways across the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.

The program was expanded in the 1950s to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the armed services of the United States.  Currently there are over 70,000 miles of highway designated as Blue Star Memorials.

I don't recall exactly where in Wyoming this plaque is located, but it's along Interstate 80, most likely at a visitor's center.  I wasn't able to find any listings of where all of the plaques are located - in fact, I didn't see Wyoming listed on the websites I looked at!

Thanks to all of our military personnel, past, present & future.
I am most grateful for your service.

Foto Finish --- Two Colors

This week on Foto Finish....
TWO Colors!!!

Lots of things went through my little pea brain when I saw this week's theme.
One of them was to write my whole post
in 2 different fonts & 2 different colors,
then take a picture of my monitor
and post that picture.

But no,
I didn't do that.
I was good,
and found a "real" thing
with 2 colors.
Actually,
I found two different things that had 2 colors,
and couldn't decide which one to share.

So...
here are
TWO
things
with
TWO
colors!

I'm not counting the stuff behind it.
I haven't figured out how to use my Photoshop yet,
or I would have changed it to black!

I don't know what kind of flowers these are,
but they grow wild in the local mountains
in the springtime.
I'm usually not much for green,
but I really like the green stems with these yellow flowers.

If you would like to see more photos with 2 colors,
pop on over to CAT PATCHES -
heck, link up with your pictures too!
The more the merrier!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Foto Finish --- Pets

Right now,
the only pets I have
are the dust bunnies living under my bed.
I didn't really feel like crawling around
on the floor to take their pictures....

This is zzyzx the cat.
She took care of me for 17 years
and yelled at me a lot!

While I was looking through my files,
I came across these photos too
and decided have a bit of a bonus!

This is my friend's dog, Buster.
He's a Chocolate Lab/Pit Bull -
and the biggest kissy face I know!

And one more, just for a smile:
Riesling,
at just a few months old.
Already a character!
(I take care of her & her sister Possum sometimes)

Share some pictures of your pets!

Foto Finish --- Photographer's Choice

This week for Foto Finish,
our topic is
Photographer's Choice.

I took this picture when I was visiting Missouri,
staying with my friend Sara,
who has been my friend since 4th grade ---
back in the Dark Ages!
I was there in April 2007,
when things should have been green & in bloom.
Unfortunately, there had been a huge ice storm
shortly before I got there.
There is just something about the road sign
near the broken tree...
Why?  Why?

Foto Finish --- Things That Are Round

Art glass is one of my favorite things, marbles are another.
so when there's an art glass marble - that's heaven!

Here's one now:

I'd say that this marble
is
definitely
ROUND.

ORANGE.
(Did you already guess that?)
Here's my entry:

Did you realize
that the whole photo is
ORANGE?
(well, except for the barbed wire)
Yep, it's part of a smallish grove
growing about a mile away
at Cal Poly University.

Here's a little more
ORANGE
for you!

Foto Finish --- Old

For this week's Foto Finish,
our theme is
"OLD".

This is a Half Dime.
The Half Dime or Half Disme,
was one of the first coins minted by the
United States.
First minted in 1792, it underwent several design changes during the nearly 80 years it was made.
The five cent silver piece shown here features
the Seated Liberty design on the front.
The arrows on each side of the date
denote that the coin was struck at a slightly reduced
weight of 1.24 grams, from the original 1.34 grams of silver.
(The arrows were removed in 1856, although the weight remained at the lower amount.)
In 1873 Congress decided to revamp the entire coin system,
removing several denominations, including the half dime.

If you'd like to see more "old" things,
pop over to Cat Patches to check them out---
or share something of your own!

Have a great weekend!

Foto Finish --- Feet

Due to some computer problems,
I wasn't able to post last week's Foto Finish - Feet.
Soooooooo...
Here we go!

Hmmm...49 cents for the yardstick -
can you still get them anymore?
This one came from Standard Brands Paint Company,
which, I believe, declared bankruptcy in 1995.

Foto Finish --- Yellow

With a theme of
"YELLOW"
I had a lot of things to choose from this week.
Traffic signs,
stacks of fabric in my stash
or at the quilt store.
A school bus,
or some of the roses in my garden.

In the end,
I decided on this.

A "Spaghetti Squash"!

If you want to see more yellow things,
or share some of your own,

Now you'll have to excuse me,
I need to make some sauce to go with this!

Foto Finish --- Things On Four Legs

This week our Foto Finish theme is
Things On Four Legs.

This is Ries
(short for Riesling).

She was just a baby here, only a few months old.
She truly is a character!

I was hoping I had a good shot of her sister Possum,
when she was still in her cast,
but they just didn't pop for me.

Foto Finish --- Favorite Places

Time again for Foto Finish!
Our theme this week is
Favorite Places.

Being in my car,
driving on Interstate 5
is one of my favorites places to be.

Probably because it means
I'm on my way to visit my sisters.

To Share your favorite places,
or see more places,

Foto Finish - Things in the City

Things in the City is this week's Foto Finish theme.
If I knew where the key to my shed was,
there may have been a picture here
that was taken in Brisbane, Australia.
But, alas, it's hiding somewhere.

So I'll take you to
San Francisco
instead.

I was visiting my sister in Northern California,
and we decided to take a trip
into "The City".
The day was quite overcast,
but I had fun snapping pics as we drove around.

If you would like to share some
city things too,
pop on over to Cat Patches
and join in on the fun!
