July NewFOs

Here are my July NewFOs!

My first project is a pillow cover.
I used a partially paper-pieced pattern from Quilter's Cache
called "Bird of Paradise".  Thanks to Marsha Hohn!

Here's the front

and the back
When I measured for the back, I decided that 10.5" would give me the 3" overlap I wanted.  So I cut two 10.5" squares...instead of 10.5" by the width of the pillow!
Argh.  But, no worries, I just made a design decision & added a rectangle to each half & voila!

Now here it is "stuffed":

I did have one other problem.  When I printed out the paper-piecing patterns, my printer would NOT print it at the correct scale. I didn't think about that when I made the 4-patches, so they were a bit too big.  Of course, it was an amount between 3/4" & 7/8" inch off, but I did the best I could.

Next is another dish mat, using free-piecing with lots of scraps with a terry cloth dish towel on the back.

It really does lay flat, honest!

And finally, I've made some blocks that will eventually be a philanthropy quilt for my quilt guild.

I'm using a technique from a video by the Missouri Star Quilt Company.  They used a design by 3 Dudes Quilting in Phoenix, AZ.  They used a Jelly Roll, but my strips are actually 3" instead of 2.5".

June NewFOs!

Hooray - I have some things to share this time!

First, I did a bunch of binding, that will go onto the blue & white quilt that is currently with the long-armer.

Next, I made some cloth napkins & napkin rings from buttons.  The napkins are 2 layers of really soft flannel.

This next block will become a throw pillow cover soon.
I used one block from the Generation Q Magazine
Playdate paper pieced pattern,
It's been a while since I've done any paper piecing, but once I got into the swing, it went pretty quickly.
I'm going to add a border of the blue to finish it off.

And last, but not least, I've been doing some
free-piecing with my scraps.
This one will end up with a dish towel on the back
to be used as a dish drainer on the counter.

Stay cool!

Why Yes, I Have Been Sewing!

I'm linking up to the NewFO linky party
with Barbara at Cat Patches.

And I have two (yes 2!) projects to share.
Ain't life amazing?

The first is a block that will soon be backed, quilted & bound, then joined with others from my guild into a Potholder Quilt for our out-going President.
The pattern is from Quilter's Cache called
Wild Geese Variation.
You can get the pattern here.
I did choose to use 3 colors instead of just 2, and I am so happy with the way it turned out!

One quarter....

The whole block!

Now this is the worst part of paper piecing:

Trash, trash, trash!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was originally going to send my next project in to Pokey Bolton, for the Festival Pet Project Fundraiser.
They had asked for 4" X 6" postcards that they planned to sell at the Quilt Festival in Houston, with all of the monies going to local animal shelters.
As usual, I couldn't decide what I wanted to do.
I went through several designs & didn't like anything.
Finally I settled on this
and traced it onto some Steam-a-Seam2 fusible.
Cut 'em out & decided on a background.
After fusing, I stitched around the cats & quilted them.
Up 'til this point, everything was working well.
Then, when I added the back & stitched around the outside, it was a huge FAIL!
You may notice the outer edge of the right postcard is a bit wavy & wobbly.
Yep, it was HORRID.
There was no way I could send them in like that & they needed to be in the mail that day.
No time to start over or figure out how to fix it.
As you can see, I did eventually spend several HOURS picking out the layers of satin stitching around the edge.
I just have to decide on a different way to finish them.
Any ideas?
So there you go - my two NewFOs.
